According to provincial demand, in 2020, Jiangsu, Shandong and Guangdong demanded more carbon fiber, respectively occupying 38%, 22% and 19% of China’s total demand, totaling 79%; Fujian and Shanghai shared 6% and 5% each; other provinces took relatively small shares. Guangdong, which stubbornly remained in first place, was overtaken by Jiangsu in 2019 and overtaken by Shandong in 2020 due to wind power.

Among the current producers of carbon fiber, the top five companies are the Japanese Toray (including the American Zoltek which it acquired), Mitsubishi Chemical and Toho, the German SGL Carbon and the American Hexcel, of which four are American and Japanese players with a combined operating capacity of 91.6 kt, or 53.36% of the world total. Toray is a leader in the R&D and production of high performance carbon fiber, becoming a recognized indicator in the industry, with an operational capacity of 54.5 kt in 2020, or 31.75% of total global capacity. Toray has a big say in the industry for its carbon fiber models and the classification is a common benchmark.

Although the world market is still monopolized by a few developed countries, carbon fiber companies in China are working hard on it: in 2020, China had an operational capacity of 45 kt, or 26.2% of the world total. Typical local players include Zhongfu Shenying Carbon Fiber, Jiangsu Hengshen, and GW Compos. In 2020, the world added capacity: 5 kt / a from Zoltek in Hungary, 2 kt / a from Tangu and Baojing, 2 kt / a from Zhongfu Shenying carbon fiber, 2 kt / a from GW Compos and 2 kt / a from Hyosung.
